A year? Really?

Yes. It's really been a year since I posted to my journal. Sheesh.

It's not like I haven't been around. Doing fandom stuff. Going to WhedonCon with feliciacraft and rahirah. Fun! Smokin' 'em at Buffy Trivia Night down at the local with the_deadly_hook. Very fun! Going to Season 2 of the Buffy drag show — also with feliciacraft. (Star Trek drag was also pretty entertaining.) Posting to communities, or at least posting to seasonal_spuffy .

I even finished a WIP! Buffy and the Bloodmobile, sequel to The Vamp Around the Corner is done! You can read it at any of these fine on-line establishments: LJ / AO3 / EF / BSV / TSR

I also posted a drabble at SS awhile back: Unintended Prophecy. That's it for fic in the past year. I've got a couple of WIPs that I still plan to finish. Courage!

I'll continue to cross-post to LJ from there/here, but I've had a multi-year problem with notifications from DW that their people haven't been able to fix. I'll give it a go, but if you comment on DW and don't hear back, that's why.

Sign of the times?

We were "mandatorily evacuated" from our house last night by the police. I do not kid.

They said an explosive device had been found "quite nearby" and that they expected to take care of it quickly, but if they couldn't the Red Cross would make overnight arrangements for us.

We had dinner guests over, so that obviously did not go according to plan. And...that's were the drama ends, really. We all walked down to the local tacqueria for dinner, and by the time we were finished with that the whole thing was over. I don't know if it was a legit bomb, or if somebody had just put their kid's science fair project on the curb and it looked weird.

My takeaway? Welcome to the new world.

Everybody here can probably extrapolate how I feel about the election, but I'm not going to talk about it here. Once I start, I'm afraid I'll never stop and anything I might have to say might be true, but it sure as hell is neither helpful nor kind, so I'm zipping it.

Meanwhile, I will be spending the next however long studying up for Tuesday. Not the President — that's what we call a no-brainer — but there are 42 ballot measures to decide in my district. Ah, democracy...

Or maybe I'll just go see Dr. Strange.

I've been buried in work since I got back, but last night I got tickets to the touring show of Hedwig and the Angry Inch (thanks feliciacraft !) and I just found out that they are doing a drag version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in a couple of weeks at our local drag emporium, so I'll be going to that. There's also a wedding coming up and our buddy's Friday DJ slot.

In short, my reality is brighter and more musical than that "other" reality. *hand waves* What are you guys up to?

Making It Up

I've decided I'm going to WriterConUK next month!

It will be my very first trip to the UK, and I'm all atwitter. I've been asking all my ex-pat friends what I should do while I'm there. One said I should order a drink called a “shandy” since I am a light drinker, and another mentioned Scotch Egg, because bacon, but I am not convinced.

Now I ask you! I'll be in Edinburgh, Bath, and London, when I'm not in Coventry, Chester, and Liverpool. Give me your suggestions about things to see and do, to eat or not eat, and places to stay. I'm thinking near Paddington*/Kensington while in London, but I could be convinced otherwise.

I was notified that I've been nominated for a No Rest for the Wicked Awards, but I have no idea for which story or in what category, so it's mysterious AND exciting!

I finally put my silly crossovers up on Twisting the Hellmouth, and that's been fun. They get lots of traffic over there. Who knew?

Belated Travel Post, Paris

I spent most of last month Over There, and it was lovely. That's the short version.

The longer version starts out with McDiva and I going off to Paris for a week and doing a bunch of things. This was my first time back in 20+ years, and her first trip to Europe. Every time I apologized in advance for dragging her all over the place, she just said, "the whole point of going is to see stuff, right?" Right!!

Where does the time go?

It's the end of August!?!

Since my last post, I've been buried in a mountain of work, which is sort of nice and sort of not. Of course, there was also a lot of travel arranging, which is like a second full-time job, at least the way I do it. There's also been plenty of recreation, including hosting houseguests, seeing bands, dancing, going to parties, having a girls weekend at a Napa vineyard with the "girls" from college. I also attended a tightly plotted drag show wherein the villain was named PIxie Pardonne Moi (sic). A friend had been tapped to pole dance (badly) during the intermission. Heh. Good times, y'all.

I've missed a lot of fun LJ activity. There were memes that seemed exciting, excellent art and fic — some of which I missed, I'm afraid — and this exciting party celebrating the 5th Anniversary of sb_fag_ends!

I only got my act together enough to post a silly prompt, alas, but the mods over there deserve to be fêted! Take a bow bogwitch, quinara, and shapinglight! Garlands also to all the contributors who continue to make that comm so great! Go, read, comment! I know I will.

My recent pre-series Giles fic, Giles and the Mountain, was nominated by very kind person(s) in Round 32 of the Sunnydale Memorial Fanfic Awards in the Best Gen, Best Drama, and Best Characterization (for Giles) categories, and also in Round 12 of the No Rest for the Wicked Awards, in the That Old Gang Of Mine (best gen) category. I'm touched that my sporadic work still appeals to somebody out there! There's still time to nominate your favorite fanworks, and make a fellow fan's day!

The Beat Goes On

Just a life post to say what's happening around here. It's Pride here in San Francisco, so there are festivities aplenty! According to the paper, a million people participate! As is my custom, I spend the lead-in to the big event going to various Frameline Film Festival films. Sometimes the films are okay, sometimes they are really, really good, but this year's standout, Anita's Last Cha-Cha (Ang huling cha-cha ni Anita, Philipines), was unexpectedly fantastic! It's primarily about a young girl's first crush, but it's filled with the interlocking stories of women and girls: moms, kids, maidens, and crones. Why are there not more movies like this? The adorable director, Sigrid Andrea P. Bernardo, spoke at the screening and is the cutest thing ever! Smart ladies being funny never gets old, you know? If you ever get the chance, see this one.

Yesterday, I spent the afternoon at a friend's place 1/2 block adjacent to the "Pink Parade" which is a sort of unofficial/official ante-party on Saturday for the Absolutely Official gathering on Sunday. Dolores Park is overrun with ladies of all stripes and their supporters letting their freak flags fly. There are costumes, amusing signs, and lots and lots of skin. We set up on the sidewalk, brought food, hung out, and occasionally made forays into the big excitement. In the evening, I went to Castro Theater for the Saturday night film, Cupcakes. The film was very good, and might be of special interest to you Eurovision-heads out there, but getting to the theater was even more exciting, as I somehow got caught in the most frenzied dance pit I've seen for a couple of decades. Heh. Walking home through the height of the street party was also an adventure. My buddy, Saint Sara, was with me for all of this, and I had to wonder how many more times a couple of old ladies will be able to manage navigating such enthusiastic crowds. Oh well, I haven't broken a hip yet!

I'm gearing up for the annual trek to the Pacific Northwest, which starts next Thursday. I'm not sure how many "30 Days of Buffy" entries I'll crank out before or during, but right now my big fandom contribution is helping herself_nyc to upload all of her stories to AO3! Her site went down a bit ago, and while it's still accessible via Wayback Machine, I'm thrilled that her work will be in multiple "current" places. Many of her earlier stories are on AllAboutSpike, and most of her Spuffy stories are at ElysianFields, thanks to the wonderful mod Susan, but there isn't anyplace that's complete and unlocked, as far as I know. Feel free to point me in the direction of any little-known stories by Herself. I'm starting to think that I'm an archivist at heart.

Since I talked to you last, McDiva and I went to Chicago for a long weekend. It snowed! We did lots of things! Fun was had! This week is the start of her school's run of SPAMALOT, which is sure to be silly. College acceptances are coming in. Taxes are done. Work is busy. I did housework last weekend and got a blister. Dear Old Dad is coming for a visit next week. I'm hoping to be around these parts a bit more after the next couple of weeks. Woo! Oh, except for the trip to NYC in a month! Double woo!

In which I have a small complaint

I know everybody likes to rag on LiveJournal, and rightly so, but I'm a little miffed at Dreamwidth right now. Apparently, if you don't have a paid account, you can't get notifications of a response to a comment you made in another person's journal. How is that okay? Doesn't that negate the whole point of people talking to each other? I bite my nail at you, Dreamwidth. I also apologize for not responding to people who thought they were having a conversation with me on DW.

This is on top of my discontent with the way they decide willy-nilly which icons you will be left with when your paid account expires. Essentially I'm unhappy with my FREE STUFF not being how I want it. Gosh. What's wrong with people?

In other news, as soon as I get out from under this mountain of work, I'm going to McDiva's art show, the Death of DOMA rally in the Castro, a Frameline (LGBT, etc) Film Festival film, and more partying in the street! Whatever shall I wear to the Pride Celebration?

Best thing about yesterday was McDiva announcing that she now has the perfect comeback to the "why don't you smile, sweetheart" question to which females are so often subjected. "The patriarchy." Of course! Why didn't all of us think of that a million years ago?

In fandom news, I fluffed my seasonal_spuffy day, which was the day after we got back from our trip. But the story is about 2/3 of the way done, I promise. I might've finished it in time for free-for-all day, but spent all day Saturday with a new friend who just finished watching Buffy for the first time. We went to Much Ado About Nothing, watched Dr. Horrible's Sing-along Blog, the Shakespeare Retold version of Taming of the Shrew, had dinner and then watched the Firefly pilot. It was a bit much, but she's young. Heh. I'm going to get back to the story writing...between tech support calls, work, jury duty, doctor's appointments, etc. We all need moar fic, amirite?

Blow out my candles!

Forgive me, friends list. It has been a week since my last post. In that time, so much has happened, the non-fannish high points being:

1. Bela Fleck at the new SF Jazz Center. Banjo fun! (Also, dinner beforehand with dear friends.)
2. Gershwin and Ravel at the SF Symphony with Dear Old Dad, who was in town for....
3. McDiva's Third Annual Fashion Show! Big doings! A triumph! One of these days, I'll post pictures.
4. A whole bunch of school-related stuff, and also work related, well, work.
5. Huge flurry of getting ready for vacation/college tour week. Still on-going. Why else would I be making a post?

But I had to note that today is the fifth anniversary of posting my first fanfic on LJ! Just five years after Buffy the Vampire Slayer went off the air. Late to the party, but very happy to be here. herself_nyc encouraged me to try my hand, and I posted without knowing it was her birthday! So, now it's a milestone day for two reasons. Happy birthday to you, darling, and happy fanniversary to me. I hoped to have some fic to post today, but that's not happening. I am working on my Seasonal Spuffy story, though, so there will be something soon!
