A few things to report...

Today, I put up a story at Bloodshedverse for the first time. I've been dancing around it for awhile. I'm not sure why I was nervous, 'cos the mod who approved it was totally sweet, and helped with my one minor formatting issue. Yep, just one. *takes a bow* It's a story you've all seen, Do You Believe?, which I did for the Fall 2008 [livejournal.com profile] seasonal_spuffy. I guess I'll try posting with SpuffyRealm and ElysianFields, too, though HTML is not my native language!

Here's the thing: it went up at 6AM, and it's already been read 220 times! 220! Only about 5 of those were me, I swear! Just to check the formatting, you know? *whistles* So, okay, only 2 reviews, but you get a read count! Posting on LJ, you have no idea how many people are reading your stuff, so I've been completely unaware of the read-to-comment ratio, but now I'm getting it. Maybe. Sort of. I'm guessing LJ members are better commentors than archive readers.

This is interesting because the limericks (you know what I'm talking about!) haven't generated a ton of comments, perhaps because of their shocking! nature. Or perhaps it's because limericks have the reputation of being a tad lowbrow, while we fanfic fans are so...nevermind. Or, maybe people just don't like 'em. Now I wonder if there is a whole population of people out there, bookmarking madly and cackling over the naughtiness, but not willing to come out and say "pretty funny". Limerick Lovers Unite!

Over the weekend, I went to a friend's annual red beans 'n rice Christmas party, which this year was also a book launch. In a stroke of synchronicity, her book is called Pottymouth: Profane Poetry, Recess Rhymes, and Other Dirty Ditties from the Playground. I felt so vindicated! Here's a little gem from the introduction:

When William Wordsworth looked to the sky and saw a bird, he was inspired to write:

ETHEREAL minstrel! Pilgrim of the sky! (etc. I got bored, so I stopped reading)

If only Wordsworth had spent more time at recess, he might have come up with:

Birdie, birdie in the sky,
Dropped a turdy in my eye,
Gee, I'm glad that cows can't fly.

Pottymouth is dedicated to collecting the great poetic works of the playground and sharing them with anyone who remembers nothing of Coleridge, Wordsworth, or Keats, but can sing five verses of "Miss Lucy Had a Steamboat" without missing a syllable.

There's a section called "The Classics" which includes two versions of the aforementioned "Miss Lucy", as well as one entitled "Limericks". The limericks section was entirely too short, IMO, but the one about the brass balls will be quoted in my upcoming 1950s fic, you can be sure. Anyway, some of you might get a kick out of such a tome, and it's available on Amazon.

In seasonal news, I adopted this sweet Santa from
[profile] nekid_spike, where he was created by [personal profile] caelieth. We're having a jolly season, sitting around eating Bugles, watching Rudolph, and eventually making cookies. I'm thinking gingerbread kitties. He's great with kids, too!

Santa Clem
