30 Days of Buffy Meme — Day 1

Okay, I'm in! Late, but in. I might as well, since I'm still thinking about Buffy, forming opinions, and currently doing a rewatch. Plus, I want to talk to you guys. So, here is my stab at this. Away we go!

The list of days... )

Favorite Season: This will probably be the toughest question in the whole set for me. All of the seasons, even the first one, have excellent qualities. I am especially fond of seasons 2, 4, and 6, though. Two has an excellent arc, the addition of Spike, Dru, Oz, and a great villain in Angelus. It's not as cinematically pretty as Four, which I love for Buffy. It's arguably her best year. She's having fun, meeting people, and overcoming vast conspiracies. She's hit her stride, and hasn't been poleaxed by the whammy of Five yet. Six I love for the sex. Partly. I'm invested in Six. I care deeply what happens. For me, the show becomes more than entertainment in Six. I don't think I'd be as fascinated with the show without Six. It goes deeper, emotionally, than I expect televised stories to go.

All three seasons are absolutely crucial to my Buffy love. If I had to pick one to take to a desert island, I guess it would be Four. No. Two. Wait. Um, possibly Six.

You know what? I don't have to give up any of them! All three of them are my favorite! 66 episodes of Buffity goodness!

That Movie Meme — Ten Crucial Movies That Explain Me

This is snagged from everywhere, and put up without a lot of thought.

Everyone should post their ten most CRUCIAL CRUCIAL CRUCIAL films, like the films that explain everything about yourselves in your current incarnations (not necessarily your ten favorite films but the ten films that you, as a person existing currently, feel would help people get to know you) (they can change later on obviously).

Heh. Don't look for drama from me, folks. Or maturity.

1. Peking Opera Blues
2. Down With Love
3. Sleeping Beauty
4. Freaky Friday (the second one) or Clueless
5. Moonstruck
6. The Incredibles
7. Rock 'n' Roll High School
8. Some Like It Hot
9. The Palm Beach Story
10. Galaxy Quest

It would probably be a different list tomorrow, but no less silly fun-filled.

(Dollhouse) Fic and a (Angel) Rec

Happy Mothers Day, my dears. Rarewomen 2014 is unveiled, so you should all go see the lady gifts. I wrote some Dollhouse Adelle DeWitt backstory, so if you're into that sort of thing, here it is:

Title: Construct of Paradise
Author: Rebcake
Rating: PG13
Word count: 1130
Characters: Adelle, Roger, OFC
Summary: Adelle didn’t regret the good old days. Even well-educated, well-ordered women like herself should have their period of experimentation.

I requested some Harmony fic, and lo! A most excellent AtS S5 Harmony fic appeared!

L.A. Confidential by [personal profile] selena
Harmony decides on a new career. After all, if Angel can be a detective, anyone can.

It's a hoot, with great Harmony voice and even a little bit of plot. Check it out!

It looks like I'm still firmly in the Jossverse, folks. Wish me fic!

Raring to go!

I finished my [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen assignment! Woo! It will be unveiled with the others sometime this weekend over on AO3.

I wrote a drabble to celebrate. That hasn't happened in a while.

Title: Conundrum
Characters: William & Drusilla in 1880
Prompt: What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

Click here to go to the story.

Yeah, babes! I'm back! To stay! All the multitude of projects that have been eating my time and my brain are back to the normal simmer, rather than a rolling boil. Rather an unpleasant mix of metaphors there, isn't it? Oh well.

This is what's been going on with me: )

Ficlet: Stars in Her Eyes

Just popping in to say I did a ficlet for [community profile] sb_fag_ends! It's for their February "My Bloody Valentine" challenge. Is it possible to do fluffy S&M? If so, I guess that's what this is.

Title: Stars in Her Eyes
Author: Rebcake
Word count: 570
Rating: R
Warnings: Not exactly sex, but not sweet romance, either.
Prompt: Diamond necklace cat o'nine tails
Summary: Spike has found an extreme way to help Buffy blow off steam.

Click here to go to the story.

Since I talked to you last, McDiva and I went to Chicago for a long weekend. It snowed! We did lots of things! Fun was had! This week is the start of her school's run of SPAMALOT, which is sure to be silly. College acceptances are coming in. Taxes are done. Work is busy. I did housework last weekend and got a blister. Dear Old Dad is coming for a visit next week. I'm hoping to be around these parts a bit more after the next couple of weeks. Woo! Oh, except for the trip to NYC in a month! Double woo!

New Fic: Midwinter Plunge

I've got a new fic posted at [livejournal.com profile] noel_of_spike! It's post-Christmas, but it's up!

Title: Midwinter Plunge
Author: Rebcake
Word Count: 3,300
Rating: PG13
Characters: Spike, “Doyle”, Faith, various bystanders. Any pairings are off-screen, but Spike/Buffy-ish.
Prompt: Spike, Doyle or Faith, Hot Chocolate
Summary: Spike catches a chill while helping the helpless in Angel S5, more or less circa Soul Purpose. Faith knows just how to warm him up.

Doyle grabbed a beer from the cooler and held it out to Spike...

TV in Briefs

I actually wear comfy yoga pants (that's trousers to you) to watch television. It's usually a group activity at our place, with the TV-less neighbors coming over bearing plates of cheese and chocolate. I'm watching more stuff than usual this year. Not sure why, but I like to think it's because there are things on worth watching. Here are my TV thoughts for this fall:

I got my [livejournal.com profile] seasonal_spuffy story posted! It's a miracle!

Title: The Sleepless Beast Knows Best
Author: Rebcake
Characters: Buffy, Spike, and a bunch of Angel Season 5 folks.
Rating: PG
Word count: 2350
Summary: It’s the 2003 Wolfram & Hart Halloween Party, and Buffy’s been invited.
A/N: For Angel non-watchers, it’s the one where Lorne accidentally starts broadcasting destinies rather than just reading them.

Click the link for the story:

Drunk guests? Check. Disco ball? Check. Unslayable demons dancing to The Ketchup Song? Checkity check check.

I apparently can't write AT ALL unless there is a deadline, and even then, the deadline gets muffed. My posting date was the 8th, which I told myself could be pushed to the Free-For-All Day on the 10th, but then lobbied the mods to extend into yet another day, since it was a holiday, after all. I am ridiculous. The beginnings of the story stem from a prompt at [livejournal.com profile] sb_fag_ends over a year ago, making it eligible for [livejournal.com profile] sb_ashtray, and it was on my [livejournal.com profile] letsgetitdone list. Does that mean it's a three-fer?

In trying to post to [community profile] seasonal_spuffy on Dreamwidth, I discovered that I can no longer post to communities on Dreamwidth, because my email notifications are screwed up over there and attempts at fixing them have left me locked out of various functions. I guess it's good that [livejournal.com profile] seasonal_spuffy moved back to LJ. I can't be the only person with these issues, can I?

Girls in Movies, Monster and Otherwise

I think I'm starting to come up with my own way of evaluating movies, which starts with the Bechdel Test (thanks, Alison!), uses a variation on[personal profile] hello_spikey's "man candy" criteria, and adds a few more items. It doesn't necessarily correlate with how much I like a film. It isn't an indication of overall quality. It's very individual, and if a movie doesn't have at least five of these things, it's probably not a movie that I'm going to be excited about seeing:

1. Does it pass the Bechdel Test? 1 point
2. Does it show positive female relationships? 1 point
3. Does it show female characters being smart? 1 point
4. Does it show female characters being awesome AND kind? 1 point
5. Are there any gratuitous female gaze shots of scantily clad pretty men? 1 point
6. Was there any non-bashing gay content? 1 point
7. Was I at any point pleasantly surprised or amused? 1 point

I like genre, but I'm not a fan of the straight-up horror movie genre. However there are some movies with those elements that strike my fancy. In the past week I've seen Kick Ass 2 which is about one kind of horror, and Warm Bodies, which is about an entirely different kind. I have thoughts. They aren't deep, but a few of them are superficially spoilery. My evaluations below.

Warm Bodies was pretty much great... )

Kick Ass 2 is absolutely ridiculous... )

I just got back from my annual Gal's Weekend with a bunch of pals from college, for which I am the designated film fest curator. That means that I show up with a dozen choices and the group whittles it down to maybe two for Saturday night viewing. It came down to Bride & Prejudice and Whip It this year.

Bride & Prejudice, no surprise, follows a familiar and beloved story, plus so very pretty! )

Whip It is a delightful trifle about alt-roller derby. )

Bonus Attack the Block... )

Summer is nice.

Someone — and I have my suspicions — nominated some of my fics in Round 10 of the Running With Scissors Awards! Woo hoo! Thanks, kind nominator(s)!

Defenseless (Spike, Joyce, Buffy, Giles, Faith; alt S4) in the Rigor {Over 10,000 words} category.
No Regrets (Mr. Gordo/Miss Edith; S2) in the Who's Huh with What?! {Unconventional Couple} category.
Rules and Customs (vamp!Xander/Spike/Angel; Wishverse) in the Stakes and Chains {Slash} category. This one is nasty and bleak. NC17.
Love Me, Love My Dog (Spike, Buffy, Xander, Angel, Cordelia, Dru; Halloween S2) in the Fanged Midget {501 - 1000 words} category.

In which I have a small complaint

I know everybody likes to rag on LiveJournal, and rightly so, but I'm a little miffed at Dreamwidth right now. Apparently, if you don't have a paid account, you can't get notifications of a response to a comment you made in another person's journal. How is that okay? Doesn't that negate the whole point of people talking to each other? I bite my nail at you, Dreamwidth. I also apologize for not responding to people who thought they were having a conversation with me on DW.

This is on top of my discontent with the way they decide willy-nilly which icons you will be left with when your paid account expires. Essentially I'm unhappy with my FREE STUFF not being how I want it. Gosh. What's wrong with people?

In other news, as soon as I get out from under this mountain of work, I'm going to McDiva's art show, the Death of DOMA rally in the Castro, a Frameline (LGBT, etc) Film Festival film, and more partying in the street! Whatever shall I wear to the Pride Celebration?

What's going on.

Just a quick check-in to say: computer/phone/tech upgrades suck. But I'm getting there. Look, ma! Internet browsing: go! Moving on.

Best thing about yesterday was McDiva announcing that she now has the perfect comeback to the "why don't you smile, sweetheart" question to which females are so often subjected. "The patriarchy." Of course! Why didn't all of us think of that a million years ago?

Vacation time! College tour time! Two travel treats in one! )

The death part... )

In fandom news, I fluffed my [community profile] seasonal_spuffy day, which was the day after we got back from our trip. But the story is about 2/3 of the way done, I promise. I might've finished it in time for free-for-all day, but spent all day Saturday with a new friend who just finished watching Buffy for the first time. We went to Much Ado About Nothing, watched Dr. Horrible's Sing-along Blog, the Shakespeare Retold version of Taming of the Shrew, had dinner and then watched the Firefly pilot. It was a bit much, but she's young. Heh. I'm going to get back to the story writing...between tech support calls, work, jury duty, doctor's appointments, etc. We all need moar fic, amirite?

Blow out my candles!

Forgive me, friends list. It has been a week since my last post. In that time, so much has happened, the non-fannish high points being:

1. Bela Fleck at the new SF Jazz Center. Banjo fun! (Also, dinner beforehand with dear friends.)
2. Gershwin and Ravel at the SF Symphony with Dear Old Dad, who was in town for....
3. McDiva's Third Annual Fashion Show! Big doings! A triumph! One of these days, I'll post pictures.
4. A whole bunch of school-related stuff, and also work related, well, work.
5. Huge flurry of getting ready for vacation/college tour week. Still on-going. Why else would I be making a post?

But I had to note that today is the fifth anniversary of posting my first fanfic on LJ! Just five years after Buffy the Vampire Slayer went off the air. Late to the party, but very happy to be here. [personal profile] herself_nyc  encouraged me to try my hand, and I posted without knowing it was her birthday! So, now it's a milestone day for two reasons. Happy birthday to you, darling, and happy fanniversary to me. I hoped to have some fic to post today, but that's not happening. I am working on my Seasonal Spuffy story, though, so there will be something soon!

Love to you all!

List of Lists

Today is the last day to contribute to [livejournal.com profile] buffyversetop5's look at excellent Buffyverse fanworks of 2012. There are lots. Even if you are pretty involved in fandom, I can guarantee you will find something cool that is new to you. Go! Check it out! Add a list if you can!

Here are links to my "Top 5" lists, because I have this weird thing about lists:

5 Excellent Short Gen Fics
5 Funny Odd Couple Fics (Slash Edition)
5 Terrific Vampire Tales (Some Historical)
5 Short Spuffy Charmers
5 Spuffy Shorts With Varying Degrees of Sad
5 Mostly Unromantic Short Fics
5 WIPs I'd Like to See More of in 2013

Fic Roundup 2012

Hey, look! It's January! My fic output continued apace last year. I never feel like I do much, and compared to many of you, I don’t. I wrote fewer stories, but because they were longer (for me) stories, the total word output is about the same as it's ever been since I began this whirlygig of fun nearly five years ago.

Fic: The Vamp Around the Corner

I've got a new, finished fic posted over at [livejournal.com profile] noel_of_spike! Complete in 3 chapters!

Title: The Vamp Around the Corner
Author: Rebcake
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 7850 in 3 chapters
Characters: Buffy, Spike, Joyce, Dawn, Willow, Tara
A/N: Takes place in an AR wherein Buffy was called to Slayerhood according to schedule, but did not move to the Hellmouth until her freshman year of college. NOT a Wishverse fic. Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight for betaing, though she can't be blamed for changes that happened after her read-through. Contains dialogue swipes from BtVS. I do not own…yada…strictly not for profit…yada…
Summary: When the Slayer's family moves house in her second year of college, a new neighbor swiftly becomes all she wants for Christmas. His wants are decidedly more complicated.

CHAPTER 1 / CHAPTER 2 / CHAPTER 3

Inspiration for this came from [livejournal.com profile] lutamira, who put up a list of tropes and asked for characters and pairings to go with them. I decided I wanted to see Spike and Buffy in a "next door neighbor AU", while retaining their vamp/slayer natures. One shower later, I had what I deemed to be a workable idea. You may judge for yourself whether you agree.
