Yeah, I feel you on this. Bearing in mind that I haven't actually read the comics, only other people's synopses/reviews and snippets of panels posted within...
That said, I wonder what this issue is saying that we didn't already know? Spike loves Buffy, Buffy is noncommittal (and possibly not even having this conversation). Second verse, same as the first.
I mean, yes, okay, we get an unequivocal acknowledgment of love for the first time since "Chosen"... but Spike's feelings for Buffy were never in doubt (IMO). There's an argument to be made, I suppose, that he might've moved on and gotten over Buffy, but if I had to put money on one of them, I'd say Spike's a MUCH surer bet than Buffy.
She's the one whose feelings needed to be explicit. Instead of making him say it again (which, yes, is manipulative of her), SHE should be the one saying "I love you and I want to be with you" if that's what she wants. Spike's been burned too many times to make the first move with her, and pushing him to put himself out there yet again, without giving anything of herself, is just unfair.
And yeah, maybe it's true to the characters (although I kind of can't even approach the "is it in character" question at this point, since I don't even recognize S9 Buffy as the same person as S7 Buffy), but it's still the relationship stagnating where it always has, and if I were invested in the Spuffy relationship continuing in the comics, I'd find it kind of disappointing (and manipulative) that this was the Big Spuffy Issue being promoted by DH.
Fortunately, I approach anything comics-related with a popcorn.gif at this point, so I can just watch the entertaining reactions from fandom. :)
