I love your ritual. You should keep it up, even if you think she's too old. I have a friend whose mother sang her a particular special Spanish birthday song (Las Mañanitas) every birthday morning, until the year she was deemed too old (25, maybe?). My friend cried all morning when her birthday phone call was just a plain old "Happy Birthday!" You'll just have to dodge the eye-daggers for a few years is all, but that's better than a sobbing child whose simple pleasure has been crushed on the wheel of life. *sob* It's tearing me up, even now.
