In other news, I went to see our local Lamplighters production of Gilbert & Sullivan's Iolanthe last night, and my argument that G&S were the Joss Whedon of the 19th Century gained new ammunition.
Exhibit A:
To indicate a person of the highest rank, Mr. Gilbert came up with the following term: Rankiest

Here's a little summary of the play:
Oh, and reading the front page of the paper today? Led to tears of joy. Things already seem to be coming around. I don't want to jinx anything, so I'll just sit here and sigh happily.

Here's a little summary of the play:
Gilbert & Sullivan's subversive political satire on how a government SHOULD be run. Featuring the tour de force "Nightmare Song" and a band of dancing fairies doing battle with a dim-witted Parliament.
It was lovely, a visual and aural delight. Plus, I always love it when the gentlemen of the chorus enter from the back of the house, dressed in ermine capes and doing the doddering "House of Lords" routine. Especially just now, after a very satisfying American version of same in real life just last Tuesday. Oh, and reading the front page of the paper today? Led to tears of joy. Things already seem to be coming around. I don't want to jinx anything, so I'll just sit here and sigh happily.

Date: 2009-01-26 07:48 pm (UTC)I'm not sure if you saw my 60s Spru fic from earlier this month, but I wondered if I got the English details right in that, as well. For some reason, I think of you as my go-to on things British. Not a job you signed up for, I know!
Our local G&S company has been at it, nonstop, for over 50 years, and they do a great job, so it's been a pleasure to dip in, which we sadly only did after seeing Topsy Turvy. Still, it's good to know that there are still classics to discover. I'm sure somebody must have written a Spru Ruddigore. It's a natural!

Date: 2009-01-27 04:18 am (UTC)I confess that I had a strong urge to see Obama don an ermine cape at some point during Tuesday's festivities but remembered myself and got my illicit monarchical desires under control.
I really need to get better acquainted with the works of G & S. (We've already discussed the sad fact that the extent of my exposure comes from repeated viewings of Foul Play, yes? That ain't right.) The college theatre is doing a production of Hot Mikado this semester, and I need to at least track down a version of The Mikado on DVD to watch with Z. so that we can have a properly metatheatrical experience.

Date: 2009-01-27 05:08 am (UTC)I know I said it before, but get Topsy Turvy from Netflix. It's awesome, and I will give you exact parental warning moments. There aren't many, and it's so gorgeous and exciting, I'm sure Z would love it. My kid and her friends were spellbound, but we did skip a few bits that would've been a bummer. It was our introduction to G&S, but then we immediately started going to live productions (thank you, school silent auction) and it's been great fun.
Heh. My silly tar baby story is getting a good response.
ETA: An update on mean girls in middle school. McDiva mentioned over the weekend that they had to watch a video on bullying at school, which she thought would be lame or funny(?), but ended up being really depressing. I mentioned our conversation, and she said, "Even the popular girls in my grade, like Selma, aren't mean." Whadaya know? However, when I asked if the video was interesting, she said, "Yeah, can't wait to try it [bullying]. Ha. Just trying to make you crazy." Her sarcasm is improving. *gimlet eye*

Date: 2009-01-27 08:11 pm (UTC)Topsy Turvy has been dutifully queued, and I would love some parental warnings when you get a chance. I've been on a BSG bender (we've never watched before) since New Year's Day and could really use a break from all the bleak. It's so dark here today that it looks like permanent 5 p.m. out there, and I'm ready for some sort of Starbucks I.V. Levity would be good, too. ;)
