Title: Fire in the Soul (2a/?)
Author: Rebcake
Rating: PG13, this chapter
Word count: 1140
Summary: A few years after Sunnydale’s spectacular demise, Buffy and her crew are getting on with their lives in San Francisco. A not entirely unwelcome blast from her past blows into town, but he’s brought more than the generally allowable amount of baggage with him.

A/N: This half-chapter takes place the morning after the events of Chapter 1. Alas, it's just a couple of gals sitting around talking, but more plot is coming soon (tomorrow?) on my journal. I'll link from the bottom of this chapter when it's up.

Obligatory Sunday morning family phone call... )
rebcake: Spike & Buffy: happy under the carpet (btvs spuffy_carpet)
I'm holding off on making any decisions about the Doctor Who premiere until I see part 2. Except that River Song is still very yummy. That's a gimme.

Sunday was my [community profile] seasonal_spuffy day! Hooray! Hooray! I posted two stories and none of them were in limerick form! Success! However, one of the stories is the first chapter in a longer fic. This is a) bad, because it's not finished, and b) good, because there's all kinds of twisty weirdness, still to be resolved. Who doesn't like that?

Both are set in San Francisco, My Fair City. The first is a fluffy one-shot — S8 comics compliant, but NOT comics dependent:

Title: Boots to the Fire (Escape)
Author: Rebcake
Rating: PG13
Word count: 2350
Summary: It wasn’t until Buffy was living and slaying in San Francisco that her fascination with black motorcycle boots became an actual problem.

You can also read it on Dreamwidth here.

The second story is not at all fluffy. However, since it's me, you know it's got its moments of levity. NOT comics compliant:

Title: Fire in the Soul (1/?)
Author: Rebcake
Rating: PG13, this chapter
Word count: 4400
Warnings: A bit Dru-ish
Summary: A few years after Sunnydale’s spectacular demise, Buffy and her crew are getting on with their lives in San Francisco. A not entirely unwelcome blast from her past (Spike! It's Spike!) blows into town, but he’s brought more than the generally allowable amount of baggage with him.

There were advantages and disadvantages to vampire slaying in San Francisco.

You can also read it on Dreamwidth here.

Clearly, titles are not my forté, and it seems to be getting worse. Also, there were formatting difficulties, but I think they're all fixed now. Please let me know if you see something weird, misspelled, or otherwise off. Happy last week of April!

rebcake: Drusilla: Come to mama (btvs dru mama)
There's a bit of Who-fever at my house, you could say. For those who are not yet infected, tomorrow is the Season 6 premiere of the "new" Doctor Who. I'm all atwitter. Well, I don't actually do Twitter, but I did break down and do Tumblr. Sort of. Don't expect much. However, on the Official Doctor Who Tumblr page, there is a photo of my daughter and her friends in full-on Whoverse drag*:

A Doctor, a TARDIS, and three Daleks walk into a con...

Are they not adorable? )

rebcake: Spike: Pretty evil (btvs spike prettyevil)
...but not prettier than you!

First, the marvelous [personal profile] constance_b  made a podfic out of my first-ever [community profile] seasonal_spuffy story, the Season 4 fill-in-the-blanks Do You Believe? Plus she did nine other stories by other writers, all in the Spuffy oeuvre, which gives me access to 1000% more Spuffy audio!fic than I had before. (My math may be off.) Anyway, it's all very cool and you should all check it out. Did I mention she has one of those charming English accents? Srsly!

Here's the master post
Here's the link to the Do You Believe? mp3 download.

Then, I garnered a few nominations over on Sunnydale Memorial Fanfic Awards, Round 23. It's very gratifying. Any writer would tell you that it makes their day (week? month?) to get recognized in this way, and I am pretty chuffed. If you can think of any stories you've read recently that stood out, you may have a few hours left to get those noms in and give a deserving author the warm fuzzies!

My nominated stories in Round 23 are:

The Scourge Does Titipu (Angel/Darla, Drusilla/Spike) G — Best Song Fic
The Dark Slayer and the Vulcan (Faith Lehane, James T. Kirk, Spock, Leonard McCoy, Christine Chapel) Teen — Best TV Crossover
The Front Lines (Robin Wood) PG — Best Gen, Best Quickie

Yup, all over the map...that's me! Thanks, kind nominators!

Anyway, all this fandom bounty (plus a fat check for some contract work, just before taxes are due) has put me in a pleasant frame of mind. Any day now, I'll turn the corner on my SS fic, and start leaving comments again!

rebcake: Joyce with Axe: Not in the brochure (btvs joyce axe)
Apparently, I have eleven DreamWidth codes for people who'd like to join up, which is looking better by the hour, is it not? Just drop me a comment, and I'll set you up.

I am up to my neck in RL and [community profile] seasonal_spuffy  prep, so my commenting is way down. Please forgive me. I will catch up. Probably.

I still made time for WonderCon last weekend, which is in my fair city (San Francisco) and which has become McDiva's annual birthday bash, although its date drifts farther away from her actual birthday every year. Here are some highlights: )
rebcake: spike air kiss (japan)
Some sweet person dove into the vaults and nominated one of my early fics, The Scourge Does Titipu (Fanged Four circa 1885), for Best Song Fic in Round 23 of the Sunnydale Memorial Fanfic Awards! The song? The sun, whose rays are all ablaze... from Gilbert & Sullivan's The Mikado. Because, well, why not? I'm tickled that anybody is still reading it, let alone liking it enough to nom it! Thanks, kind nominator!

Now, for the elusive stuff... )

rebcake: Spike & Dru: Good games for everyone (btvs spru good games)
Are any of my f-listies planning to attend the Gallifrey One convention in LA this weekend? McDiva went last year and had a blast, so a few of us mother/daughter Doctor Who fans are going again this year. McDiva has made a TARDIS dress for the occasion. I'm mainly excited because Jane Espenson is a scheduled guest! She's my favorite Buffy writer, was the showrunner for Caprica (the last few episodes of which had me practically panting with love), plus she's a staff writer for the new Torchwood! So...yeah. I am a total fangirl. I'm sure I'll get excited about other — more Who-related — stuff once I'm there. But if any of you guys are gonna be in the house, it will be even better.

Oh! Speaking of Torchwood, our satellite service just made the Starz channels free for the next year, so we might actually be able to watch it! Woo!

Sunday PSA:

The deadline for nominating fics for [community profile] the_hellmouth_awards is Tuesday, February 15, and there are a few categories that could be "plumped". I've a feeling that my f-list has plenty of ideas for outstanding fic starring rare pairs in the areas of Fluff, Comedy, and that old standby Kink, but it would be extra-spiffy if the neglected category of Best Plot could get a little more love. There is also plenty of room in Best Romance, Best Long, Best Series, and Best Characterization. The only categories that are full are Best Male Slash and Best Heat.

Head on over and check out the list of Nominees!

Then check out the Rules and consider giving a feedback-starved author* a thrill and Nominate!

*All authors are starved for feedback. It's just a fact. Those writing less common pairings might be a little hungrier than others, though.

Title: A Well Respected Man About Town
Author: Rebcake
Rating: PG
Word Count: 980
Prompt: genficminis round 5: minor male characters. [personal profile] snickfic requested Ethan with Anya, too high a price, and something mystical.
Characters: Ethan Rayne, Anyanka, Halfrek, The Host
Summary: Ethan celebrates his latest success on the Hellmouth, after Band Candy and before The Wish.

Ethan eyed the two lovelies in the booth near the stage… )
rebcake: Anya eats popcorn while watching bloody mayhem (btvs Anya watching Joss)
I fail at memage... )
rebcake: Spike & Dru: Good games for everyone (btvs spru good games)
I did another fic! I was unable to resist the genfic_minis' minor female characters challenge and now the world has just a little bit more Harmony!

Title: Haven’t Seen Your Face For A While
Author[info]rebcake
Word count: 1175
Rating: PG
Characters: Harmony for [info]brutti_ma_buoni, with bonus Jonathan and Spike.
Summary: Harmony reflects on her lack of reflection circa Superstar.

Follow the link for fic and prompt details:
Dying was the scariest thing to ever happen to her, and that included the time Jonathan sang to her at her Sweet Sixteen...

Also, my fluffy Skip/D'Hoffryn story, The Gay Agenda (or, Happy Anniversary) has been nominated in a few categories at [community profile] the_hellmouth_awards , a new award site that spotlights rare pairings in the Buffyverse. Go check them out and don't be shy about nominating any of your favorites, old or new. Just click on the pretty to see all the nominees:

Thanks, kind nominator(s)! I'm especially happy to be represented in the "Unbelievably Believable" category. I mean, isn't that what this writing lark is all about?

So, Season 8 is all wrapped up. I have mixed thoughts on the last issue (#40).

Before I get into that though, I thought I'd paraphrase tonight's amusing dinnertime conversation with MiAmor and McDiva!

What happened in the war, daddy?... )
Okay, there was some good stuff in this issue... )
rebcake: Spike & Buffy: happy under the carpet (btvs spuffy_carpet)
Piffle! It's never too late! Except when it is. *ponders*

I've been home with a sick kid for a few days, but there's been plenty of joy, and some of it from fandom! Can I get a woo and a hoo? 'Cos you guys are great!

First thing to celebrate is the announcement of the winners in Round Nine of the Running with Scissors Awards! There's some great stuff on the list, including a few things by some friends who happen to be excellent writers. So congratulations to brutti_ma_buoni, duh_i_read, rahirah, and moscow_watcher among others! Well done, all. My silly Giles piece won something, too! Whee! The mods haven't released the pretties yet, only the list of winners, but those are always intensely gorgeous and it just gives us something to look forward to, right?

Also, the buffyversetop5 recommendation site has been going full steam, and I've been viewing and reading tons of stuff that I missed. Which admittedly slows down the writing a bit, but I'm getting a lot out of it. Also, I just happened to luck out and make the 1,000th rec post to the site, which led to fabulous prizes! Virtual confetti, champagne, as well as a couple of months of paid LJ time, and a couple of years worth of extra icons! It brought a joyful tear to my eye, let me tell you! Thank you to the very generous mods, and thanks to all the people who are giving us such great recs! Especially those that are reccing my stories, of course. ;-} I've got a few lists still to post over there, though the more I delay, the more of my favorites get picked off highlighted by listmakers more fleet than I. Maybe I won't have to post anything more because all the good stuff will have already been recc'ed? Ha! Never happen. We could definitely use more pre-series lists, which I'm having trouble compiling from my foggy memory bank. Any suggestions?

Have a wonderful (long) weekend, my lovelies! Think not of the inevitable betrayals of (some of) our fellow men, but the promised land we make of our existence here on earth through kindness, thoughtfulness, and the act of creation.
rebcake: Giles reads distasteful fanfic volume (btvs giles reads fanfic)
Thank goodness for communities, where I posted 90% of my fic this year. Particularly helpful in getting me to put fingers to keyboard were still_grrr, fantas_magoria, seasonal_spuffy, and sb_fag_ends. Thanks also for culture in general, since this year's sort-of crossover topics in my fic include war movies, Lysistrata, A Modest Proposal, love songs, Clueless, Rock 'n Roll High School, Veronica Mars, Love and Rockets (the comic), and anti-smoking propaganda. Still, all fic listed here is set in the Jossverse.

rebcake: dalek wearing santa hat (christmas)
Yesterday was my noel_of_spike posting day, so naturally I've been busy writing Christmas fic about...Dollhouse? Thanks muse. Thanks a lot. I suspect it's because I made a blanket statement that I didn't think I'd ever write in any fandom but Buffy. It's such a contrarian muse. (Little bitch.)

It all worked out, though, so I've got two new seasonal fics to share with you!

Title: The Gift of the Techno-Magi
Author: Rebcake
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 875
Characters: Joel Mynor of “Bouncy the Rat” fame, Adelle DeWitt
A/N: A bit of background for the Dollhouse episode Man on the Street.

Joel Mynor had more or less got used to being a rich widower...

Title: Yule Be Sorry (The Great Hunt of 1998)
Author: Rebcake
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 1,200
Characters: Spike, Drusilla, and the Chaos Demon

Dru was a good Catholic girl, but traveling around in the 1960s and ‘70s had made her curious about alternative spirituality and other such rot...

Caveat: neither of the above are especially cheerful. I blame my minor cold, because it couldn't be my evil brain, could it?

Wasn't the solstice/full moon/lunar eclipse neat? You don't stay up that late? People! It's been almost 400 years since the last time! Tsk.

In other Yule news, I have made 30 dozen pecan cookies, and a batch of star-shaped shortbread for a favorite kid with severe nut allergies. Today, I am looking at making another 20 dozen cookies, hitting the post office (won't that be fun?), wrapping gifts and packing up to leave for glamorous Oxnard tomorrow for a long Xmas weekend with my delightful in-laws. Or staying in bed with a box of tissues.

rebcake: Giles reads distasteful fanfic volume (btvs giles reads fanfic)
I've been a busy little fic beaver (no cracks), but I've been remiss in linking things up here. So let me remedy that right now!

Four stories (never before linked from this journal) below the cut... )
rebcake: Drusilla: Come to mama (btvs dru mama)
If you're like me, you may have trouble making decisions — especially when all the choices are good ones! Still somebody's got to do it, right? You have a few more days to let your voice be heard at the Running With Scissors Awards. There is a rather painless little poll going, one question for art, one for short fic. They are calling it the Peeper's Choice and the Hairy Eyeball Awards (Viewer and Reader's choice). Go check it out and make the mods and the creative folks who are nominated feel the love! It isn't difficult or time-consuming, I swear.

Full disclosure: One of my stories is nominated in one of the categories, but so are several far more worthy selections. A couple of really amazing pieces I hadn't seen/read before are included, so finding more of the good stuff made me happy.

Welcome to December, my lovelies! I have a feeling we're going to have a ball!

rebcake: Ethan Rayne: You say chaos like it's a bad thing. (btvs ethan chaos)
Joss' little misdirect about Whit Stillman and Wes Anderson doing the Buffy reboot is sort of inspired, I think. If only movies weren't so expensive, it might be fun for various creators to put their own imprimateur on beloved classics.

Baz Lurhmann re-doing Buffy?
Pedro Almodovar re-doing Blade Runner?
Tim Burton re-doing 2001: A Space Oddyssey?
Terry Gilliam re-doing  Alien?
Gus Van Sant re-doing Psycho?

Oh, wait. Never mind. Still, lots of fic writers have fun with the re-mix concept, so theoretically an auteur with a distinctive point of view could make something very different, weird, and wonderful from existing works in film as well. It happens. Just...not that often. Usually because the directors who have the kind of vision I'm talking about are more interested in telling their own stories. Lucky for us.

rebcake: spike air kiss (she)
I ficced again this week. It's almost a trend!

Title: Stay Frosty
Author: Rebcake
Rating: PG
Word Count: 920
Characters: Cordelia, Angel, Wesley, and Jhiera (from She)
Summary: Cordelia has a solution for the newest heat wave.

Cordelia had noticed that Angel very obviously did not look at people’s necks...

I almost never write in the Angelverse, though I try to take the things that happened there into account when writing in the Buffyverse. I am also light on fic from the early seasons of Buffy, which means that I've never written Cordelia before now, although I love and admire her. The reason I finally dipped into Angel is that I have a deep — and apparently not widely shared — fondness for the episode She. Which just happens to be coming up starting on Monday at that very glamorous and inclusive Buffy-and-Angel-by-the-episode LiveJournal community, Phantasmagoria! Mostly I'm gonna wait and share the squee over there, and I'd be thrilled if anybody wanted to join me!

Elevensies

rebcake: Spike & Giles: drinking tea (btvs spiles tea)
Happy Nigel Tufnel Day to [personal profile] beer_good_foamy . Turn it up to eleven, babe!

Of course, it's also Armistice Day, Remembrance Day, and Veterans' Day. The name may change, but the sentiment is constant. I continue to be amazed that we can commemorate our fallen — everybody's fallen, actually — with a poppy or a minute of silence, and then turn around and throw more precious young humans into the charnel house. Don't mind me. Maybe I'm the crazy one.

On that note, here's a bit of mayhem I posted in honor of the 90th anniversary of the the end of The War to End All Wars(TM):

Tipperary (1916) Spike/Drusilla
At loose ends in war time, Spike and Dru decide to check out the big show.

I wish you and yours a peaceful holiday.

rebcake: Spike & Buffy: clasped hands catch fire (btvs spuffy_burning_hands)
Yes, I know it's comics Wednesday, but I haven't anything to say as I've not read it yet and I'm sorta kinda trying to stay unspoiled for once. Give me a couple of hours and I'll be up to speed. In the meantime, I bring fic!

Yesterday was my seasonal_spuffy posting day, and I even posted well before midnight! Victory!

Title: Feels Like Heaven
Author: Rebcake
Rating: PG13 for Spike’s language.
Word Count: 4,200
Summary: Buffy’s not in a good place. Dawn suspects Spike can help.
Warnings: Angsty angst.
A/N: This is a post-NFA fic in which the events of the S8 comics are mentioned, but they didn’t actually happen. Clear? Okay then!

Dawn met Spike at the reception area. “You look like crap...”

I also squeaked by and posted a new story on Halloween for Monster Month at sb_fag_ends, a community for short Spike/Buffy fic and art.

Title: Mystery Date
Author: Rebcake
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 700
Prompt: Werewolves vs. Vampires
Summary: Wherein Buffy and Willow discuss their man troubles. Set post-Something Blue but before Willow gets heavy with Tara. Another Season 4 Chocolate Therapy interlude.

"I know it’s the Hellmouth, but we’re 0-for-3 here! Our track record with apocalypses is hotter than with guys..."

The above story may contain a few more sports metaphors than I would normally use, because of my home team being in the World Series! Which they handily won on Monday, btw. In case you missed it. San Francisco! Woot! Anyway, madness ensued, I ate too much Halloween candy, and now I have palpitations. Or maybe those are because of election day? Which, once again: San Francisco: Woot! Many, many other places: bummer.

The other fic-related item is that my funny little Lysistrata-inspired story The Lioness on the Cheese Grater (Giles), was nominated for a couple of Running With Scissors Awards! It is indeed an honor. Thanks, kindly nominator!

rebcake: Spike & Giles: drinking tea (btvs spiles tea)
Dear friends of mine from across the pond,

We finally got to see the first episode of Steven Moffat's Sherlock Holmes on PBS last night, hosted by Alan Cummings who pronounces it "Sherlick" in all his adorable Scottishness. (Love that guy.) Anyway, at the beginning, John Watson is sitting down to a cuppa and the camera focuses on a crest on his mug. I figure it's to establish either a branch of service or his educational background, but which is it? This is the sort of thing that would be entirely lost on an American audience, and I'm sure it doesn't have any huge bearing on the proceedings, but I want to know! Does it show that he's really elite at something, or from quite a middling background, or what? The only thing I'm sure of is that it's not from Hogwarts...

Thank you in advance for feeding my obsession with trivial detail.

rebcake: Joyce with Axe: Not in the brochure (btvs joyce axe)
I haven't been posting much, on the theory that if I don't have anything nice to say I'd probably better not, you know? I've been commenting tons, because I have loads of nice things to say about what my friends are doing! Y'all rock! Plus: hooray, hooray, Seasonal_Spuffy begins today!

But! Then! Whoa! Some incredibly kind and generous person just gave me the gift of a year of a Dreamwidth paid account! Totally anonymous and everything! I suspect it's someone who is sick of me bellyaching in all my DW comments that I don't have enough icons...I am a wheel, hear me squeak. Still! Thanks for being so awesome, kind giftor! I am a happy, icon-loading camper! And look: posting to DW directly. If the LJ crosspost goes smoothly, I'll be in for the long haul.

Also, I scored tickets to the Tom Lenk Live in San Francisco show for next month, so I've got to share my excitement about that! The Golden Guys play in LA was canceled last month, so no Enver or Sasha Roiz or Jane E. for me, alas, but I suspect Tom will be a ton o' fun all on his own.

Ain't life grand?

P.S. I've been writing oodles of Spike & Buffy stories, but I can't quite seem to close the deal on any of them. Comics fallout? Yea or Nay?

rebcake: spike air kiss (Default)
Here's my belated Comic-Con 2009 report. It's long. It's rambling. The pictures are likely too big. Here goes, anyhow.

San Diego Comic-Con 2009 was, for me, Buffy Scribe Safari! There's other stuff, but you might as well know the theme, right from the start.
